Will an 89.5 round up?
Only if your instructor rounds. Many syllabi state hard cutoffs — an 89.99 is still a B+ under a hard 90.00 line. If the syllabus is silent, ask before finals week.
What's a normal weight for a final exam?
High school finals usually run 10–20%; college finals 25–40%, and a comprehensive final can reach 50%. Bigger weight, bigger swing — in both directions.
Does your final replace a low test score?
Some instructors replace your lowest midterm with a higher final exam score. If yours does, your real current grade is better than your portal shows — recalculate with the low test dropped.
Extra credit changes the inputs
Add extra credit to your current grade before you calculate. Two points on an 85% makes you an 87% going in — sometimes the difference between needing a 96 and needing an 88.

What this final grade calculator actually calculates
A final grade calculator answers one question: what do you need on the final exam to finish the class with the grade you want? Your semester grade is a weighted average — everything you've done so far counts for part of it, and the final exam counts for the rest. Because the weight of the final is fixed by your syllabus, there is exactly one score that gets you to your target, and it can be solved directly.

Show the formula and a worked example
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ WeightWeight is the final's share written as a decimal — 25% = 0.25. Example: (90 − 87.4 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 97.8.
Say you're carrying an 87.4% into a final worth 25% of your grade, and you want to finish with a 90%. Your current work contributes 87.4 × 0.75 = 65.55 points. To reach 90, the final must supply the remaining 24.45 points out of its 25 — that's a 97.8% on the exam. Tough, but now you know — decide whether to chase the A- or lock down the B+.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Subtract your current grade's contribution from your target, then divide by the final's weight: (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight. With an 87.4 average, a 25% final, and a 90 target, that's (90 − 65.55) ÷ 0.25 = 97.8%. The final grade calculator above does this live as you type.
What grade do I need on my final to get an A?
It depends on your current average and the final's weight. Carrying a 92 into a 20% final, you need a 97 to finish at 93; carrying an 88, an A takes rounding or a heavier final. Enter your numbers in the final grade calculator above — the verdict says whether an A is still on the table.
Can I still pass my class if I fail the final?
Often yes. Your floor is your current grade times the weight of everything already done: an 82% average with a 25% final means a zero on the exam still leaves you at 61.5%. Run your floor before you panic — passing is usually more secure than it feels at midnight.
Does this final grade calculator handle weighted categories?

What if the score I need is over 100%?
Then that target is mathematically out of reach — no exam score gets you there. The calculator says so plainly and shows the best grade you can still finish with, so you can aim at a reachable letter instead. Extra credit or a dropped low score can put a target back in play.
Do final grades round up?
There's no universal rule. Plenty of instructors round 89.5 up to an A-; plenty hold a hard 90.0 line. The policy lives in your syllabus — ask in week one, not finals week.
